Third Grade Classroom Rules and Procedures
Accelerated Reading (AR) Program
The AR program is extremely worthwhile and participation is mandatory for the students. Each month the children should read enough books to accumulate five points (more points are always encouraged). They need to choose books from the library and classroom that are designated as AR books.
After they read a book, the students take a quiz on the computer. If they answer all the questions correctly they will score a certain number of points. The number of points the book is worth is often noted inside the front cover.
If the students do not answer all the questions correctly, they earn fewer points; or they may not earn any points, if too many questions are incorrectly answered. The computer will let them know how many points are earned after the quiz is scored. This process is repeated until a minimum of 5 points is earned for each month. The whole AR process will be thoroughly explained by me to the students.
The students may stay after school on Tuesdays, giving them extra time to read and take their quizzes. There is also time during the school day for the children to take AR quizzes. More specific information and a permission slip to stay after school for AR Club will be sent home.
Birthday Celebrations
The children are allowed to bring in a simple snack for their birthdays. We celebrate summer birthdays at the end of the school year. Please be aware our classroom is a nut free room.

Communication
The main venue of communication will be via the classroom website. Classroom news, daily homework assignments, and upcoming tests will be posted weekly. Check the parent portal website to review your child's grades. You may e-mail me on the classroom website. I will check my e-mail at the end of the school day.
Discipline
Refer to the school directory for disciplinary measures.
Dismissal
Please send in a note letting me know if your child is being picked up, going to the Just for Kids Program, or any other alternate plans. If the dismissal will not change throughout the year (ex: picked up every Thursday or scouts every other Wednesday), one note will suffice. Please understand that without a written note, signed by you, I am obligated to send your child home on the bus.
Homework/ Studying
Generally homework should take 30-45 minutes each night, as long as your child remains focused and on-task. Homework is meant as independent practice of material that was learned in class. Your child may need clarification on directions or occasional assistance, but homework should be done independently. Homework assignments are expected to be neatly and thoroughly completed on time. You will be notified if your child has missed an assignment. Your child's homework grade will be affected.
Because chapters across the subjects seem to end roughly at the same time, consistent review/study is strongly encouraged, so your child does not become overwhelmed. Normally, there is no written homework on weekends. However, every student must read 15 minutes each day. They do not have to read on Sundays (take the day off). A parent must sign the homework planner each day indicating your student read. Parents it is extremely important you become involved in this assignment. Without your signature, your child can not receive credit for his reading assignment, and his/her grade will suffer.
Library
Library is on Thursdays. There is a small fine due for overdue books.
Paper Packets
Your child's work will come home weekly in the form of a paper packet. I staple together your child's work for you to review, sign, and return to school.
Spelling corrections should be written 5 times correctly on the back of the spelling test.
Please return the signed packet within a couple of days after you receive it.
Physical Education
The third graders will have PE on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Please send in sneakers and gym clothes on these days.
Prayers
Any time you would like the third grade to pray for someone special, please let us know.
Reading Journal
Reading 15 minutes every night is required. Please, sign you name in the Parent Initial Box found in the last column in the homework planner, indicating your child read 15 min. for that day. Repeat this practice for each day of the week. This is considered homework and a reading homework grade will be taken for the week. If for some reason a night is missed, your child may make up the time by reading 30 min. the next day. Please, encourage your child to read AR books. This will help facilitate getting the require points for the month.
Snacks
Please, send in a healthy snack for your child on noon dismissal days. Please be aware there are students allergic to peanuts and tree nuts in the classroom. Therefore, third grade is a nut free classroom.
Water
Being adequately hydrated is extremely important for optimal learning. I strongly request that your child brings in fresh water each day. He/she will be allowed to keep his water bottle on his desk for easy access.
